Sister Ann Lavelle, Dyslexia Consultant and Tutor
Welcome to Keys to Success for You. I would like to share with you how I became involved in teaching those with dyslexia. I am an educator with 30 plus years of experience in the Kindergarten through Grade 8 classroom. Over the years I became increasingly concerned about children who struggle with reading, or can’t read at proper reading instruction and average or above average intelligence.
In my quest to find out the answer to that question my research led me to explore dyslexia. In recent years the understanding and acceptance of dyslexia has been brought to the forefront through scientific research such as that from Dr. Sally Shaywitz from The Yale Center for Dyslexia & Creativity. Scientists with the aid of Functional magnetic resonance imaging can now depict the neural pathways of readers with and without dyslexia. This phenomenal breakthrough showing evidence gives credence to dyslexia and why some, about 20% of the population - struggle to read. In addition, ways to help those with dyslexia continues to be researched and studied providing educators with the best methods to help those with dyslexia.
In the witnessed the devastating effects that dyslexia can have on a child and their family. Daily the child struggles in school, their academic life suffers at every level and the impact on the child's self-esteem can be profound. Parents are at a loss as to how to help their child and are constantly looking for answers.
Research studies show that the best way to help someone with dyslexia is through an Orton-Gillingham based program. I have focused on using the Barton Reading & Spelling System to help those with dyslexia. This Orton-Gillingham based program is multi-sensory, direct, explicit, structured and sequential in scope. Also, the Barton Reading & Spelling System research and evidence based (for more information go to http://www.dys-add.com.) This program is used by many throughout the country giving those with dyslexia hope in their ability to read and succeed in school and later on in their careers.
I look forward to working with you for screening for dyslexia, and/or tutoring. I wish you and your family the best.
